Redefining Success in Business: A 20-Year Journey Towards Economic Systems Change

Over the past 20 years, B Lab™ and the B Corp movement have demonstrated to the world that a different kind of economy is not only possible, but absolutely necessary. We have proven that businesses can fundamentally care for all the stakeholders they impact—workers, suppliers, customers, communities, and nature itself—rather than solely focusing on their shareholders. Today, as our movement proudly spans over 10,000 Certified B Corporations™ across 160 industries and six continents, collectively employing more than one million people, we are equipped with a clear vision to catalyze true economic systems change.

The Core Problem: A Flawed Economic System

In our current economic system, short-term gains are consistently prioritized over long-term value, and profits are prioritized over people and the planet. This approach has led to severe consequences across societies and cultures, including structural social and economic inequality, environmental degradation and resource extraction, and a notable decline in individual well-being alongside a loss of social cohesion. B Lab™ has identified three key aspects that reinforce this problematic role of business: the design of legal systems, short-sighted business behavior and operations, and a narrow corporate culture surrounding dominant narratives of success.

The Blueprint for Transformation: Our Theory of Change

To combat these entrenched global challenges, the B Global Network introduced its Theory of Change—a guiding mission to transform the economic system into a more inclusive, equitable, and regenerative global economy. System change—shifting both the structure and culture of our economy—is the ultimate solution.

Our goal is a regenerative economy where the planet remains stable, life is sustained, and all people can peacefully access basic resources like food and health, protected from planetary harm. To achieve this, restoring and regenerating natural resources is critical. This paradigm shift is anchored by the Declaration of Interdependence, a commitment signed by all B Corps, stating that business ought to be conducted as if people and place matter, and that we are responsible for each other and future generations.

From Vision to Action: Standards, Measurement, and Impact

Ideas alone cannot change the world; businesses need rigorous tools to measure and scale their positive outcomes. B Lab™ Standards provide the foundation for this work, requiring businesses to take meaningful action across seven key Impact Topics: Fair Work; Climate Action; Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion; Governance & Collective Action; Environmental Stewardship & Circularity; Purpose & Stakeholder Governance; and Human Rights.Furthermore, businesses utilize the B Impact™ digital platform to meticulously measure, manage, and improve their social and environmental performance. Through intentionally designed Impact Business Models (IBMs), companies can systematically create specific positive outcomes, such as restoring natural environments, donating essential products, or hiring individuals from underemployed populations.

Looking Ahead: The Next 20 Years and Our 5 Strategic Priorities

We know a better way of doing business is possible, and now is the time to use our collective power to embed this change into the laws, policies, and culture of our economy. To achieve this, our Global Network is focused on five strategic priorities:

1.  World-leading standards: Providing credible, open-source tools backed by rigorous third-party audit processes to cement trust.
2.  An ambitious and inclusive community: Delivering valued experiences that support continuous impact and improvement.
3. Enhanced engagement and collective action: Delivering more opportunities for B Corps to connect and collaborate across geographies and industries.
4. Coordinated advocacy and mobilization: Advocating to embed stakeholder governance in law worldwide, building upon our success of contributing to benefit corporation legislation in over 50 jurisdictions.
5. New narratives of success in business: Drawing on data and stories from over 10,000 B Corps to redefine the role of business for policymakers and investors.
The B Corp movement is much more than a certification—it is a collective call to action to address society’s most critical challenges. By uniting diverse stakeholders around a common purpose, we can build an economy that truly works for everyone.
